Cada año, los Tony premian a los espectáculos musicales en dos categorías:

- Mejor Musical Nuevo: son musicales originales que se vieron en Broadway por primera vez en la temporada 2008-2009.

- Mejor Musical Revival: son musicales que ya se han visto en Broadway en años anteriores, pero durante la temporada 2008-2009 han sido repuestos. En general son musicales clásicos o de autores reconocidos y muchas veces suelen ser montados con visiones contemporáneas.
